Automating Reporting Process for the Veterans Affairs Survey of Healthcare Experiences of Patients

Veterans Affairs (VA) health facilities routinely collect information on patient experiences in VA hospitals. The Survey of Healthcare Experiences of Patients (SHEP) measures the experiences of patients who receive care from VA hospitals to ensure high-quality care for veterans. SHEP addresses important aspects of the patient experience, including communication with doctors, communication with nurses, responsiveness of hospital staff, pain management, communication about medication, discharge information, cleanliness of the hospital environment, quietness of the hospital environment, and transitions of care. . Insight’s data scientists and dashboard designers automated the development of in-depth quarterly reports to provide VA facilities with consistent and clear information on patient experiences. The data system produces aggregated information for the 18 Veterans Integrated Service Networks, including patient satisfaction measures for over 140 VA facilities The system contains bar charts, scatterplots, tables, and driver diagrams that profile the characteristics of each VA facility. Insight’s data scientists also automated the development of quarterly facility-level reports for inpatient and Patient-Centered Medical Home facilities using Python and R. The scripts produce fully formatted PowerPoint and PDF reports, thereby reducing report errors and simplifying the reporting process. The development of automated reports enables VA facilities to receive more rapid information and feedback on patient experiences to improve the care provided.
