Insight Analyzes SNAP Benefit Redemptions

October 1, 2020 by Caroline Brent-Chessum

Along with USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service, Insight is pleased to share a report highlighting SNAP Benefit Redemption Patterns including timing, number of transactions per household, and the rate at which households exhaust their SNAP benefits. The study compares fiscal year (FY) 2017 data to data from FY 2003 and FY 2009. We investigate in detail three atypical redemption patterns: (1) ending balance greater than $200, (2) months in which a benefit is received but the household does not make a transaction, and (3) out-of-state transactions that occur beyond the state’s border counties.
