Insight Policy Research to Evaluate CMS Innovation Center’s Maternal Opioid Misuse Model

March 20, 2020 by Daven Ralston

To address the significant problem of opioid use in pregnancy and associated high rates of babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome or neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has awarded cooperative agreements to 10 state Medicaid agencies to implement the Maternal Opioid Misuse (MOM) Model. By supporting the coordination of clinical care and the integration of other critical services, the MOM Model has the potential to improve quality of care and reduce costs for mothers and infants. Insight Policy Research (Insight) was awarded a 5-year contract to evaluate the model. Insight is proud to partner with our subcontractors Abt Associates and the Urban Institute in working with CMS on this important project. The mixed methods evaluation will determine the impact of MOM on healthcare delivery, health outcomes, patient experiences, utilization, and cost.

According to Anne Peterson, co-founder and principal of Insight, “The MOM evaluation award furthers Insight’s longstanding commitment to research in support of vulnerable and underserved populations, and we look forward to supporting CMS on this important initiative.”
